After receiving a call from environmental activist Nidaa Hamza reporting an injured large pelican near Amchit Beach, the Joint Operations Team of the Anti-Poaching Unit – Land Operations Division (MECSHAP–CABS) immediately headed to the site in an attempt to rescue the bird.
However, the injury was severe. The pelican had been shot with live ammunition and died as a result of its wounds.
The pelican had been passing through the area as part of a flock of migratory birds on their spring journey from Africa toward Europe, turning its passage along the Lebanese coast into a tragic end after being targeted by gunfire.
This incident once again highlights the serious threat posed by the targeting of migratory birds and the need to protect their migration routes across Lebanese territory and coastal areas, while strengthening efforts to pursue violations that threaten wildlife and biodiversity.
